What John Glenn Taught Me

earth ribs                               curve blue green                                                below

the second time: watching                                             in thick cold nothing

borealis tentacles                               boiled at the arctic parts

                                                                   uncoiled from the heavy

for the second time                             & i                                          10 year old          girls

at a sleepover                         while above                                                        lisping

                across the sky                       his shuttle

                              my friend                                   arm heavy

from a tetanus shot                                                              gravity snapped

back to                                                                                  the bone                                  piloted

our spaceship                                       we too                                                    cinctured

in orbit, & this once        like a loud mouth

                               the earth all ours                   bloomed

                  fireworks of                                                        daylilies, cymbidium orchids

beneath star scraps she flew us to safety

& i knew already when days before

we pulled a tv to the classroom         i watched him burst

the sky

instead of band practice the ringed imprint

my french horn made                        in my hands                           at the lift
